Devastating Yard Fire Claims Three Miniature Horses

A devastating yard fire has struck one of the UK’s largest miniature horse farms, leaving the close-knit equestrian community in mourning. Three horses tragically lost their lives in the blaze at Rosaphia Horses/Willock Farm near Wisbech St Mary in Cambridgeshire—a facility that has been a beacon for miniature horse breeding excellence.

    A Community in Crisis

The fire consumed three barns at the working farm operated by miniature horse breeder Samantha Wheatley, her husband David, and their children Charlotte and Sophia. While the family and their staff escaped safely, the emotional toll has been immense. The farm lost not just structures, but irreplaceable animals and years of dedicated breeding work.

Among the three horses that perished were a promising show colt that Samantha had been carefully preparing for the show ring, an imported American mare, and a recently gelded pony. Each loss represents not only a financial setback but a heartbreaking sacrifice of animals the family had nurtured and cherished.

The Full Extent of the Loss

Beyond the devastating loss of the three horses, the fire obliterated nearly everything the farm depended on. According to Amanda Breakell, a close family friend, the destruction was comprehensive and catastrophic.

“They have lost all of the outbuildings, the tractors, the stable yards—every rug, blanket, and brush has gone,” Amanda explained. “There’s not even a hoof pick left. Just thank goodness it wasn’t winter, or the whole stable yard would have been full and the loss would have been tremendous.”

    Community Support Pours In

In a touching display of solidarity, Amanda established a JustGiving fundraising page to help the Wheatley family rebuild their essential infrastructure. The response was both swift and generous—within just 24 hours, supporters had already raised more than half of the initial £5,000 target.

Amanda’s commitment to helping her lifelong friend stemmed from a profound place of gratitude. As an end-stage kidney patient, she received crucial support from Samantha when she needed it most. “Sam helped me when I needed it,” Amanda shared. “She took on 24 miniatures I owned, which is a big ask.”

    Rebuilding with Resilience

Samantha is reportedly devastated by the tragedy, but the outpouring of support from the horse community offers a glimmer of hope. The equestrian world has a well-earned reputation for coming together during times of crisis, and this case is no exception.

“The whole situation is absolutely tragic, I just can’t put it into words,” Amanda said. “I have known Sam for years, she bought her first miniature from me and she’s my best friend—I couldn’t just sit by and not do anything. We will rebuild and get her back on her feet.”

For those wishing to support the Wheatley family during this difficult time, contributions to their JustGiving page continue to make a real difference. In the equestrian community, we stand together—and Samantha and her beloved miniature horse farm will rise again.
